Highlands Presbyterian Church| Jacksonville, Florida
Highlands Presbyterian Church consisted of two buildings-a sanctuary with connecting offices and a education building with a small fellowship hall. Built at separate times, the two buildings are oriented at different angles toward the center of a heavily wooded site. The buildings are facing a parking lot to the west. The project is a new 9,100 s.f. building housing nine classrooms, toilets and a fellowship hall with a kitchen. This building will be situated in what is now the parking lot in order to provide an enclosed courtyard and preserve the maximum number of trees. The new classrooms flank the existing classrooms to form a symmetrical entry into a courtyard. The new parking lot meanders around the trees at the rear of the site to complement the sanctuary and form a plaza between the buildings. Covered walkways connect the three buildings. Construction is wood frame on concrete slab on grade. The roof structure for the classrooms is pre-engineered wood trusses. The roof structure of the fellowship hall is exposed wood decking on heavy timber wood trusses. Exterior materials are wood siding, brick and asphalt shingles to blend in with the existing sanctuary.
